Side 1 of FTR 152 is the story of the frustration of the publication of Manning’s Bormann book. When Manning was finally able to get Lyle Stuart, Inc. to publish the book, Lyle Stuart had both of his legs broken the week the book was published. FTR 125 is a spontaneous interview with Paul’s son Peter, conducted after Peter called Mr. Emory’s show. FTR 155 consists of the last published work that Paul did. Both FTR 283, and Side 1 of FTR 152 discuss Mr. Manning’s riveting professional dialogue with the Bormann group, through professional intermediaries.) Eventually, Paul’s son Gerry was murdered in retribution for the Bormann research, and as a warning against publishing a followup volume In Search of Martin Bormann. The “target selection” by the Bormann group for its retribution may well have been determined by the dedication of Martin Bormann, Nazi in Exile.

More about Jersey City Mayor Frank Hague
WHAT HAS happened in Jersey City may be dictatorship. There is considerable proof that Mayor Frank Hague rules his community of 350,000 with a tyrant’s disregard for the law. But one thing is certain: the circum stances that created Hague, the boss, could hardly have occurred any where else in the world. If this is Fascism, it’s the American brand.
Hague himself is as American as a hot-dog stand. This comes out in his talk about his city, and the picture he has of himself in relation to it.
“I made the city,” he says. “Nobody cared a damn about it before I came along.” He tells you about the free service in the Jersey City Medical Center, the psychiatric clinic for maladjusted children, the abolition of prostitution. He has taken care of his people, after his fashion.
“You take that time of the big coal strike,” he says. “Why, the Chief of Police came to me and said people can’t get coal, schools are shutting down. I said to him, I said, `You go and find out whether there’s any coal in town.’
“Well, he came back and said Burns Brothers had some coal, but they were shipping it to New England. I said to him, `You go down to the ferries and stop that coal.’ Then I told the head man at Burns, `You’re going to sell us coal.’ He didn’t like it but finally agreed. Say, we sold 5000 tons to the people for five cents a scuttle.”
Aggressiveness marks Hague’s manner. Holding an ordinary conversation, he thumps his listener’s chest for vigorous emphasis. No orator, he roars through a speech. Hague didn’t go much beyond the sixth grade in school; his speech, except when polished for state occasions, is devoid of grammatical pretensions.
There is little sham about the man. In his own eyes he is armored in righteousness – no drinking, no smoking; a sound family man. A devout churchman, he gave a resplendent $50,000 altar to St. Aedan’s Church in Jersey City.
And what of all this money which his critics intimate he has taken from somewhere? They say he lives like a millionaire, and owns a summer home for which he paid $125,000. He goes to Europe in de luxe suites on de luxe liners. For years this has been going on, while Hague has never made more than $8000 annually in public office. Hague frankly admits he has made money, although he refuses to go into details. A successful man, he says, is always in a position to make money, he is put in the way of making money

Casella’s Restaurant in Hoboken – the quintessential mob headquarters, meeting place and hangout
May 2nd, 2010From a NJ State Commission of Investigation report
CASELLA’s RESTAURANT
Of all the licensed beverage establishments in the state, Casella’s Restaurant in Hoboken was perhaps the quintessential mob headquarters, meeting place and hangout. Casella’s is to the New Jersey arm of the Genovese crime family what the more famous Ravenite Social Club in New York’s Little Italy is to the Gambino/Gotti family. (Ironically, it was at Casella’s that Louis “Bobby” Manna discussed murdering John Gotti on behalf of the Genovese family.)
In testimony at the public hearing, FBI Special Agent Robert Lenehan described Casella’s as “a safe haven, a secure stronghold where (Manna) could meet his criminal associates and direct his criminal operations on behalf of the Genovese family.” Manna has now been convicted on federal racketeering and conspiracy charges and has been sentenced to 80 years in prison. At the time of his conviction, he was the consigliere (counselor) — the third ranking member — of the Genovese crime family, one of the most powerful families in the nation. Casella’s was owned by Martin “Motts” Casella, a longtime associate of Manna who was convicted with him and who has since died in federal prison.
Agent Lenehan further described Casella’s as a secure, virtually impregnable stronghold …. Nothing happened in Casella’s Restaurant without Marty’s knowledge; there were lookouts on the street and watchful eyes at the bar. Even certain bathrooms were off limits to patrons because they were used as secure meeting rooms for Bobby, Marty and their close associates. For years, Casella’s control and influence in the blocks surrounding Casella’s led FBI agents to conclude that the restaurant was virtually immune to electronic surveillance, our most valued investigative and prosecutive technique.
Presumably, those “watchful eyes” Lenehan referred to did not include Hoboken authorities, who continually renewed Martin Casella’s liquor license, despite his notorious and long association with Manna and the Genovese crew.
* * *
In 1977, Manna was released from a state prison where he had been confined for five years for civil contempt for his refusal to answer questions regarding organized crime before this Commission. Shortly after his release, he began to reclaim control of the rackets he had lost while incarcerated. By 1980, Manna had become consigliere of the Genovese family. In the words of FBI Agent Lenehan, Manna held
one of the three most powerful positions in any LCN (La Cosa Nostra) family, responsible for advising the boss, controlling thecapos, one of the chain of command who could authorize murders and make the major decisions of the family — in the thin air of conclaves of bosses, Commission meetings, making and breaking bosses, the LCN boardroom.
And most of these decisions were made at Casella’s.
In his testimony, Lenehan was describing the period leading up to the investigation, trial and conviction of Manna, Casella and other figures in the Genovese crime family. Lenehan noted that Manna’s usual haunts were the street corners of Manhattan’s Little Italy, but in the late 1980s New York became a “swirling arena of law enforcement pressure” and Manna returned more often to the relatively safe haven of Hudson County and Casella’s.
In 1987, the FBI, despite the difficulties already described, succeeded in planting listening devices in Casella’s. Monitored together with the State Police, the Division of Criminal Justice and the IRS, the devices revealed the extent to which the restaurant was used by Manna and his associates. It had become evident, Lenehan testified, “that by early 1988 the legitimate business enterprise of Casella’s was virtually non-existent and it had effectively become little more than a typical mob social club.” He also likened the restaurant to “the board room of the New Jersey operations of the Genovese family.”
The Commission’s protected witness, a former northern New Jersey associate of the Bruno/Scarfo family, also testified about Casella’s:
Q. How did Bobby Manna use Casella’s Restaurant?
A. Well, it was a meeting place for anybody who wanted to see him or, you know, from other families or his own family, whatever.
Q. Did you ever have a sit-down at Casella’s Restaurant?
A. Yeah, I had a sit-down with a customer that they had taken from me by one of his controllers, Bobby Manna’s controllers, and went there with Freddie Salerno in a sit-down and they gave him back.
Q.Who was the subject of that?
A. Petey Cap. Petey Cap is with Bobby Manna and he’s in the gambling business, and he had stolen one of my runners.
Q. How was that dispute resolved?
A. It was ruled in my favor and Bobby told Petey Cap, make sure that he got back to me.
Q. Is Petey Cap, Petey Caporino?
A. Yes.
Q. Do you know Alfred Salerno, Freddie Salerno?
A. Yes.
Q. What position in what family was he?
A. Bruno/Scarfo family, he was a soldier.
Q. He was murdered in 1980. Do you know why?
A. Well, supposedly Freddie Salerno and Tony Bananas did (killed) Angelo Bruno, and also over a giant number package in Jersey City, two million dollars a day, numbers.
Q. How much a day?
A. Two million. . . .

John V. Kenny: I wish that Stern was here, so I could spit in his eye.
May 1st, 2010
Originally appeared in Tiger In The Court
By Paul Hoffman
As election day approached, it was clear that the net was closing on Kenny and his Hudson County cabal. But the Little Guy continued to spout defiance. “I wish that Stern was here,” he said in early October, “so I could spit in his eye.”
On October 29, Kenny threw a $100-a-plate dinner at the Jersey City Armory for Senator Harrison Williams, running for reelection against the Republican state chairman, Nelson Gross. Speaker after speaker laced into Lacey and the federal investigation. Congressman Gallagher called it “a Gestapo stalking through our county, an anglicized version.”
Among the Irish Catholic Democrats of Hudson County, anything anglican is suspect.
Kenny also injected a racial motif into his remarks-of a different sort. He acknowledged buying the bonds: “I never knew that when you want to take care of daughter and children that it was an offense against the U.S. government. If that displeases Lacey or that great Jewish lawyer Stern, well, that’s just too bad. I’m going to provide for the welfare of my children.”
The Newark News said that Kenny had “reached depths of personal and religious vilification.” Senator Williams had to issue a statement expressing his “deep regret” over Kenny’s language, though he doubted that Kenny had intended an anti-Semitic slur. He hailed the Little Guy as “a great humanitarian.”
Williams romped to an unexpectedly easy victory. Two days later the “great humanitarian” John V. Kenny appeared, under subpoena, before the grand jury. He was accompanied by his attorney, the late Walter D. Van Riper, who had had firsthand experience of the Byzantine intrigues of Hudson County politics. As state attorney general during World War Two, he had investigated gambling in Jersey City and had obtained several indictments. Whereupon the U.S. attorney’s office, headed by a Hague hireling, indicted Van Riper-for allegedly selling black-market gasoline. Not surprisingly, both cases lapsed into limbo.
Kenny didn’t spit in Stern’s eye-he took the Fifth Amendment . . . or tried to. He refused to sign a waiver of immunity and asked permission to read a statement. He got it-but before he could get the words out of his mouth, Stern started firing a barrage of questions: “Did you purchase those bonds?”
“Certainly I did.”
“Did you purchase them for cash?”
“Yes.”
“Through what means did you purchase them for cash?”
“What do you mean?”
“How did you buy them?”
“With cash – cash that I had saved for forty years.”
“Who handled the transaction for you?”
“Well, I’m not supposed to answer any questions….”
But he did-for eight more pages of transcript. Kenny insisted that the cash came from his private business concern, Terminal Industries, which cleaned cars on the Pennsylvania Railroad, and that his wife kept the money in a basement clothes hamper.
Finally, Kenny managed to read the statement Van Riper had prepared: “Mr. District Attorney, members of the grand jury: I am advised by my legal counsel that in view of the fact that I am the target of this investigation and that an effort is being made to bring about my indictment, if I were compelled to testify at this time, it would amount to a violation of my constitutional rights. Therefore, acting on that advice, I most respectfully decline to answer the questions asked of me in this proceeding on the ground that to do so might incriminate me.”

Captain Brown, one of the principal slave dealers of the New World
April 30th, 2010Retirement Hall
Where Prince William Henry, the son of George III., is said to have dined
From Historic Houses of New Jersey by W. Jay Mills, 1902
In old Pamrapaugh, a scattered Dutch settlement frequently visited by hunting-parties from New York City during the eighteenth century, a Captain Thomas Brown, who had won some distinction in the French wars, built, in the year 1760, a large mansion, costing many thousand pounds, which was one of the finest dwellings in New Jersey.
Tradition says Captain Brown was the son of English parents residing in Bergen County. While still a young man he married Anna Van Buskirk, a great heiress, who inherited from her parents, Lawrence and Feytie Van Buskirk, a large portion of a tract of land situated at old Minarchquay (commonly called Pamrapaugh), now Greenville, about three miles south of Jersey City, extending from New York to Newark Bay. It was on the choicest portion of this land, some years after his wife’s decease, that Captain Brown erected his great mansion, which, with its immense rooms, wide double galleries, and profusion of English and French furniture, silver plate, and other luxuries, became quite noted, notwithstanding a rather isolated situation. Travellers of distinction journeying between New York and Philadelphia were generally entertained at its hospitable board, and in the spring and fall it was always the scene of extensive hospitality.
There is a halo of uncanny mystery around the career of Captain Brown, for he was one of the principal slave dealers of the New World. Shipload upon shipload of human freight are known to have been confined in the underground cellar of Retirement Hall, and many of the old manacles and chains were in place in its walls until a few years ago. Search among the records of colonial slave-dealers reveals very little about him. The one bright spot in his life, looking at us from this somber page of history, is the marriage of his only daughter and heiress, in October, 1772, to Andrew Gautier, a member of a prominent New York family. (Andrew Gautier was then in his early teens, and had recently been a student at King’ s College.)
. . .
Tradition says that it occurred one stormy evening. Several boats full of redcoats, one of them containing the young prince, having left the Black Horse or the Rose and Crown, the famous Tory resorts on Staten Island, were driven by a squall over towards the Communipaw shore, and made for the little wharf near Retirement Hall, where they demanded refreshment.
Prince William Henry, the third son of George III., was the hero of the hour among the British and Tories on his landing in New York in September, 1781. The arrival of a son of the sovereign gave them fresh hope of subduing the erring colonists. Fetes and dances marked his arrival in the city, the fairest belles taught him to skate on the Collect pond, and a writer of the time has pictured him followed every step he took by Tory entertainers and Hessians singing high Dutch tunes and dancing rigadoons.

Rear view mirror: The William Macchi vs. Robert Janiszewski race for County Executive
April 29th, 2010One jackanape who thought that history was being made actually kept a diary!
- – -
. . .
Wednesday 9/26/95
Dead, Dead, Dead. There was hardly any work here today. It did start to pick up around 4:00. Figures. Anyway, I worked more with Bill Macchi. I also did some letters for Bill. Until tomorrow.
. . .
Friday 9/28/95
The barbecue was great. I came up for lunch. I was working all day on Bill Macchi’s campaign. It seems that I am looked upon as a political junkie, I vehemently hate that title, and it is simply not me.
Friday 10/20/95
. . . I also created the college kids for Macchi flyer. I will distribute these along the corridors at St. Peter’s College. Maybe I could get more support with the kids, if I throw a party with acholic (sic) beverages. Who knows? I was granted the money now lets see about people.
. . .
Wednesday 10/25/95
Today was quiet except for the Democratic incumbent bashing Macchi for betrayal of the Democratic Party. I must say, even though I support Macchi and help him with some votes, this campaign is rather dirty. I cannot believe that each one is running an immature campaign. This is not the Macchi I know. I guess political turmoil could change one’s outlook on them.
. . .
Monday 10/30/95
Today I started to work on my project some more which is scheduled for this Thursday. I hope I get a good turnout. The mayor just came to me and told me that Bill Macchi and he will be stopping by. Oh great… added pressure.
Tuesday 10/31/95
Happy Halloween
Wednesday 11/1/95
Today was rather eventful. I did a lot of last minute preparations for tomorrow nights big event that I am holding. Hopefully it will be a big event. I called all the colleges and faxed them material. I also made some phone calls so that I do not look like a pompous ass.
Thursday 11/2/95
O.K. here we go. I did some more running around. Went up to the Macchi headquarters and picked up some signs and did a lot of final contacting. I hope I will have a great turnout. I plan to.
Friday 11/3/95
. . . The turnout was pretty good. I mean not everybody came for a long time till the end around 11 o’clock. However, Bill Macchi was happy and so was I. . . .
Monday 11/6/95
T – 1day. The office is going crazy. I tried to get everything done that I had to do for the campaign, but everyone seems to have their own agenda. Good Luck Bill!
Tuesday 11/7/95
Off Election Day…
Wednesday 11/8/95
We got demolished, annilated (sic), creamed. I can’t believe it. Bill’s own district didn’t even vote for him. What the hell happened? Today I did some clipping of the election and I wrote a letter to the Weehawken Reporter. Fun! . . . I finished up some extra homework I had as I played secretary. Very quiet day here in Jersey City. Everyone seems depressed.
Israeli Intelligence operations in Hudson County and 9/11
April 28th, 2010. . .
Northeastern New Jersey—Another Vital Center of Operations for Both Sides
a. Hudson and Bergen Counties: The Operating Base of the Israeli New Jersey Group
While the Israeli DEA groups were active in Hollywood and elsewhere in the United States, another group of Israelis (the “Israeli New Jersey Group” and, collectively with the Israeli DEA Groups, the “Israeli Groups”) was operating in Hudson and Bergen Counties in northeastern New Jersey. The Israeli New Jersey Group appears to have been unknown to federal and state
law enforcement authorities until September 11, 2001.
On that day, immediately after the first aircraft, the North Tower Plane, crashed into the World Trade Center, a resident of
Bergen County, New Jersey, just across the Hudson River from lower Manhattan, became alarmed when she saw a group of men
celebrating “on the roof of a white van in the parking lot of her apartment building.”77 She wrote down the license number of the van and called the police. The police were told that the men were “posing, dancing and laughing against the background ”78 of the disaster, which could be plainly seen across the river. The men were “smiling and exchanging high-fives.”79 An FBI alert was promptly issued:
76 Spy Rumors Fly on Gusts of Truth, Americans Probing Reports of Israeli Espionage, by Marc Perelman and Forward Staff, the
Forward March 15, 2002.
“Vehicle possibly related to New York terrorist attack. White, 2000 Chevrolet van80 with New Jersey registration with ‘Urban Moving Systems’ sign on back seen . . . at the time of first impact of jetliner into World Trade Center. Three individuals with van were seen celebrating after initial impact and subsequent explosion. FBI Newark Field Office requests that, if the van is located, hold for prints and detain individuals.”81
The men were five Israeli citizens, Sivan Kurzberg (the driver of the van), Paul Kurzberg, Yaron Shmuel, Oded Ellner and Omer
Marmari. The van was finally stopped in East Rutherford, New Jersey at 3:56 P.M. The driver and passengers were arrested by
Sergeant Rivelli and Officers DeCarlo and Yannacone of the East Rutherford Police Department.
77 Transcript of ABC News telecast, June 21, 2002.
78 Statement of Steven N. Gordon, Esq., counsel for the five members of the group, as reported in Yediot America on November 2, 2001.
79 Ibid.
80 Vans of various makes were also, of course, the common means of transportation for the Israeli DEA Groups, and Chevrolet vans were used by Israeli DEA Groups in New York, Dallas, Chicago and San Diego. DEA Report, paragraph 113, p. 33, paragraph 26, p. 9; paragraph 21, p. 8; and paragraph 119, p. 35, respectively.
81 As quoted in the Bergen (New Jersey) Record, September 12, 2001. The men may have been witnessed celebrating twice, in
separate locations, once at the time of the impact of the North Tower Plane and a second time when both towers were burning. Compare the FBI statement with the ABC transcript, supra, n. 72, and the statements of the Israelis’ counsel in Yediot America, November 2, 2001.
The local police were soon joined by other law enforcement authorities. Sivan Kurzberg was asked several times to come out of
the van but, fumbling with a black leather pouch, refused to do so. Officer DeCarlo then forcibly removed him. The FBI agents who arrived on the scene or were otherwise involved included Kevin Donovan, Daniel O’Brien and Robert F. Taylor, Jr. The FBI ultimately took control of the individuals, the evidence in the van, and the investigation.
Sources close to the investigation said they found in the van “maps of the city . . . with certain places highlighted,” adding that “it looked like . . . they knew what was going to happen.”82
Yaron Shmuel lied to the police as to where the men were at the time of the World Trade Center attacks, saying that they were on the West Side Highway in New York (not celebrating across the Hudson in New Jersey). He gave his address as 1345 Drexel Avenue in Miami Beach, Florida (not far from Hollywood). Mr. Ellner was carrying $4,700 in a sock-like sack. Sivan Kurzberg told the police at the time of his arrest–
“We are Israeli. We are not your problem. Your problems are [now?] our problems. The Palestinians are the problem.”83
82 Bergen (New Jersey) Record, September 12, 2001.
83 The question in brackets is my own. The quotation, and the above related details of the arrest of the five members of the Israeli New Jersey Group, are all as set forth in greater detail in the Preliminary and Supplemental Police Reports of the arresting officers of the East Rutherford, New Jersey Polic Department, dated September 11, 2001.
All of the men were handcuffed, placed on the grass and given Miranda warnings. A sixth member of the Group, Dominik Suter of Fair Lawn, New Jersey, also an Israeli national and the owner of Urban Moving, was later questioned by the FBI at the company’s offices in Weehawken. The FBI searched Urban Moving’s premises for several hours, and removed boxes of documents and a dozen computer hard drives.84
b. The Leader of the Israeli New Jersey Group Flees to Israel and Becomes an FBI Suspect
When the FBI attempted to interview Mr. Suter once more a few days later, he had fled the United States for Israel along with his family.85 According to the New Jersey State Division of Consumer Affairs, Urban Moving’s premises were closed on September 14, 2001. On December 7, 2001 a New Jersey judge allowed the state to seize its property. Early in 2002, the New York Department of Transportation revoked Urban Moving’s license to do business in that state.86
Dominik Suter is included on the May 2002 FBI Suspect List, along with Mohamed Atta and the other hijackers and suspects, under that name and two others he has apparently used, Omit Suter and Omit Levinson.87 He is given two addresses in New Jersey, his apparent residence in Fair Lawn and an address in Jersey City, very close to that of a number of other FBI suspects.88 Though he had fled, Mr. Suter’s name did not appear on the October 2001 FBI Suspect List. This may be because in early October 2001 the FBI was unaware that Urban Moving was operating in the same area as the future hijackers of the Pentagon Plane and visiting hijackers from Florida including Mohamed Atta (see below).

c. Hudson and Bergen Counties: The Staging Ground for the Future Hijackers of the Pentagon Plane
It soon became apparent, however, that Hudson and Bergen Counties were the second most important locus of the future hijackers’ U.S. operation and was the staging ground for the hijacking of the Pentagon Plane. The May 2002 FBI Suspect List shows, unlike its October 2001 predecessor, that all five future hijackers of the Pentagon Plane, Khaled al Mihdhar, Nawaf al Hazmi, Salem al Hazmi, Majed Moqed89 and Hani Hanjour (the pilot) lived or had mailing addresses or were otherwise active in towns closely interspersed, within about a four-mile radius, with the towns of the Israeli New Jersey Group (Weehawken, Jersey City, Fair Lawn and Rutherford). The future hijackers’ towns included Paterson,90 Fort Lee,91 Totowa,92 Hoboken93 and Elmwood Park.94 There were also FBI Suspects in Jersey City,95 Harrison,96 Seacaucus and Hackensack.97 See MAP 3.
88 See MAP 3.
89 No address is given on the October 2001 FBI Suspect List for Majed Moqed and his name is omitted, presumably in error, from the May 2002 FBI Suspect List. But Moqed appears to have been known by May 2002 to have lived in the hijackers’ Paterson apartment.

Atta, al Omari, and Ahmed al Ghamdi, though based in Hollywood and (al Ghamdi) Delray Beach, Florida, were among the
hijackers who had addresses in Paterson, Fort Lee and Elmwood Park as well as in South Wayne. Up to six or more of the hijackers appear to have lived on Union Avenue in Paterson at one time or another between March and August 31, 2001.98
d. The FBI’s Conclusion: The Israeli New Jersey Group
were Mossad Intelligence Operatives Spying on Local
Arabs in Hudson and Bergen_Counties
There have been a number of press reports in the United States on the Israeli New Jersey Group, most notably in the Forward. In the same article that reported on the Israeli DEA Groups, the Forward states that the nature of the FBI’s review of the case changed after the names of two of the five Israelis appeared on a CIA-FBI database of foreign intelligence operatives. This has been confirmed by a former chief of operations for counter-terrorism with the CIA.99 At that point, the FBI launched a foreign counter-intelligence investigation. All five of the men underwent polygraph tests, one of them seven times. At the end of that investigation, the FBI concluded that the Israeli New Jersey Group had been conducting a surveillance mission for Mossad, and that Urban Moving served as a Mossad front.100 They further concluded that the Israelis were “spying on local
Arabs.”101

The Commission’s Final Report (p. 230) does not place any Pentagon Plane hijackers in Paterson until May. Other sources place them there in March, when Hanjour and Salem al Hazmi are said to have signed the lease for the Paterson apartment. Hijacker Timeline, p. 22; Connecticut Post (Bridgeport), March 6, 2002 (preparatory hijacker meeting in March in Fairfield, Connecticut just before the move to Paterson).
8. Inadequate Israeli Warnings in August 2001
As noted above, almost immediately after September 11, reports emerged of Israeli warnings, in August, that major terrorist attacks were imminent. On September 16, 2001 the Daily Telegraph (London) reported that Israeli intelligence officials said
that they– “warned their counterparts in the United States last month that large-scale terrorist attacks on highly visible targets on the American mainland were imminent. . . .
99 See transcript of ABC News telecast, June 21, 2002.
100 Marc Perelman, op. cit., March 15, 2002. The Forward’s source was a former American intelligence official who said he was regularly briefed on the investigation by two law enforcement officials acting independently.
101 The Forward’s source in the March article also said the five men were released (Suter had fled to Israel) because “they did not know anything about 9/11.” But this statement needs to be weighed in the light of the men’s demeanor and statements, and the statements of local law enforcement officials, on September 11, 2001, the inclusion of Mr. Suter on the May 2002 FBI Suspect List, and the revelations on that List that Hudson and Bergen Counties were a critical center of operations for the future hijackers and FBI suspects as noted above. The FBI was also under pressure from U.S. political figures to release the members of the Israeli New Jersey Group, including Richard Armitage of the State Department and two New York Congressmen. Senior U.S. Officials Join Effort To Free 5 Israelis Held in Brooklyn, Ha’aretz News, October 29, 2001.
. . . (T)wo senior experts with Mossad, the Israeli military intelligence service, were sent to Washington in August to alert the CIA and FBI to the existence of a cell of as many of 200 terrorists said to be preparing a big operation.
They had no specific information about what was being planned but linked the plot to Osama bin Laden and told the Americans that there were strong grounds for suspecting Iraqi involvement.”102
The Los Angeles Times reported on September 20, 2001 that a “high-ranking U.S. law enforcement official” confirmed that–
“FBI and CIA officials were advised in August that as many as 200 terrorists were slipping into the United States and planning ‘a major assault on the United States . . . .’
The advisory was passed on by the Mossad. . . . It cautioned that it had picked up indications of a ‘large-scale target’ in the United States and that Americans would be ‘very vulnerable’, the official said. It is not known whether US authorities thought the warning to be credible, or whether it contained enough details to allow counter-terrorism teams to come up with a response. But the official said the advisory linked the information ‘back to Afghanistan and [exiled Saudi militant] Osama bin Laden.’”103

103 Officials Told of ‘Major Assault’ Plans, By Richard A. Serrano and John-Thor Dahlburg, Los Angeles Times, September 20, 2001. The L.A. Times retracted its story the next day, reporting that the CIA (not the source of the story) later flatly denied the statements, and that the Times’s source, the “high-ranking law enforcement official,” had based his account solely on what he read in the newspapers! The L.A. Times retraction referred to a “British newspaper account,” presumably the Daily Telegraph article. The U.S. law enforcement official’s account, however, as quoted above, said that Mossad had warned of a single “large-scale target” and had warned that the Americans would be “very vulnerable.” Neither statement was included in the Daily Telegraph article. The U.S. official’s account also made no specific mention of an “imminent” attack, and none at all of any “strong grounds for suspecting Iraqi involvement,” both reported by the Daily Telegraph.
Fox News also reported on May 17, 2002 (and apparently also on September 14, 2001)104 that— “based on its own intelligence, the Israeli government provided ‘general’ information to the United States in the second week of August that an al Qaeda attack was imminent.”
Neither the Commission in its Final Report or in its Staff Statements nor the Joint Committee Report specifically mentions any such warning from the Israeli government. These Statements and Reports do, however, defer to our intelligence community’s desire to safeguard and maintain the secrecy of its “sources and methods”. These are likely to have included Israeli warnings and the Israelis’ own sources. But in view of the dramatic questions raised by the Israeli Groups’ activities in the United States in the months leading up to September 11, these sources and methods now need to be disclosed.
As shown in the tabular comparison in Exhibit E, the accounts of Mossad’s warnings in August bear the unmistakable imprints of authenticity. Mossad’s warnings were reported by the Daily Telegraph and others right after September 11, well over two years before the Joint Committee’s report and the publication of the Presidential Daily Briefing (PDB) of August 6, 2001. Yet they bear a remarkable similarity to both the Joint Committee’s description of “all-source reporting” and the PDB’s account of “clandestine, foreign government and media reports and recent FBI information.” The key differences, as shown in Exhibit E, are Mossad’s warning that (a) the attacks were imminent, (b) they were to take place on the U.S. mainland, and (c) 200 terrorists were in the United States to carry them out. Mossad also alone warned of “suspected Iraqi involvement,” though
this of course has never been established and is generally considered to be untrue.
104 Fox did not specify its source, and I have not been able to locate its piece of the “14th” to which Fox referred in a telecast of December 12, 2001.
That we did receive warnings of this general nature from Mossad seems more than likely. But the real issue, again, is, given the extensive surveillance by the Israeli Groups of U.S. Arab groups and, in all likelihood, of the future hijackers in their central bases of operation and elsewhere in the United States, were not the Israeli Groups, or some of their members, aware of what was going to happen in advance? Is this not dramatically shown by the behavior of the Israeli New Jersey Group the morning of September 11? And if so, did the Israeli government decide not to provide us with enough information to stop them?
As noted in the next section, the Israelis may have given us warning in late August 2001 of the presence in the United States of Khaled al Mihdhar and Nawaf al Hazmi, resulting in the CIA’s having them placed on the State Department’s Tipoff Watchlist.105 Or this may have been part of the Israeli warnings earlier in August. In either case, the CIA’s and the Commission’s explanation of how these two future hijackers came to be Watchlisted, which makes no mention of Israeli warnings, is highly confusing and, as we shall see, in the end difficult to believe. Even so, the Israeli warning as to the two men would have come too late, for we now know that they were then or soon hiding in an obscure motel in Maryland, from which they did not emerge until September 11.106
105 As the Commission has noted, this would not in any event have prevented Mihdhar and Hazmi from flying, but would have precluded them from obtaining visas, which they already had (they were both here). Staff Statement No. 2, p. 8.
One television documentary cited above (which did not have access to or study in any detail the documents, lists, reports and other information set forth herein, or even any knowledge of the existence of the Israeli New Jersey Group), has put the relevant question bluntly, in the form of a question, an answer and a rhetorical question
“What about this question of advanced knowledge of what was going to happen on September 11? How clear are investigators that some Israeli agents may have known something?”
“It’s very explosive information, obviously, and there’s a great deal of evidence that they say they have collected none of it necessarily conclusive. It’s more when they put it all together. A bigger question, they say, is how could they not have known?” [Emphasis supplied.]107

Urban Times News: Earl the Hat Morgan is supporting Acting Mayor L. Harvey Smith
April 27th, 2010Inside County Lines
Urban Times News
October 1, 2004 – October 7, 2004
According to the Jersey Journal editorial staff, the newspaper does not take a political position. Of course that is the furthest thing from the truth. Earl the Hat Morgan is supporting Acting Mayor L. Harvey Smith because he is allowed to sit in the meetings and give advice with Catfish Jones and Ed Cheat Cheatum. For example, he agreed with these two airheads about firing Willie Flood and then taking her back pay. The newspaper should be upfront about Earl the Hat and stop him now. Why not tell the truth Uncle Harvey? The Urban Times News has several New Jersey newspapers as well as the New York Times calling to find out why we refer to Acting Mayor L. Harvey Smith as “Uncle Harvey”. We want to clear the record once and for all.
When Glenn D. Cunningham resigned as the U.S. Marshall for New Jersey to run for the office of mayor of Jersey City, L. Harvey Smith was upset because he believed that he should have been asked to run and become the first African American mayor of Jersey City. The supporters of Glenn Cunningham knew that Smith did not have the qualities to be mayor, and from that point on, Smith was upset. When Smith decided to run for reelection as Councilman -atLarge, no one would put him on their ticket, mainly Council President at the time, Tom DeGise. DeGise told Smith there was no room on his ticket for him. Lou Manzo, who was also running for mayor in 2001, said he wouldn’t even talk to Smith because of Smith’s loyalty to
Republican Mayor Brett Schindler. Smith had nobody to call but Glenn Cunningham, so he called Cunningham who was reluctant to put him on the ticket.
Smith already had a reputation as a double-crosser. Smith had the Reverend Ralph Brower call Cunningham and Joe Cardwell to support him getting on the ticket. Cunningham finally said okay. During the campaign, the ungrateful Smith never showed up for meetings or walked with campaigners among the voters. After Cunningham won the election, Smith wanted to become Council President, but former Mayor Brett Schindler and the City Council of Tom DeGise and William Gaughan would never support Smith. They would not support Smith for Council President even though he had been Councilman-at-large for eight years. Again Glenn Cunningham against his better judgment made Smith Council President. As soon as he became Council President, DeGise and Gaughan told him that he should be the mayor not Cunningham. Smith immediately turned against the Cunningham administration.
L. Harvey voted against every important item the administration recommended. He even voted against the Rev. Ralph Brower’s appointment to the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency. When State Senator Joe Charles decided to become a Superior Court Judge, DeGise and Gaughan told Smith they wanted him to run him against the first African American Mayor of Jersey City for State Senator. Smith was happy to be supported by the Hudson County Democratic Organization led by Tom DeGise and William Gaughan. Cunningham won the State Senate race with a devastating 9-1 margin of victory. Since his election to the City Council and Council President on the Cunningham ticket, Smith has always been an Uncle Tom for Tom DeGise and Bill Gaughan. When Glenn Cunningham died from a massive heart attack, DeGise did it to Smith again. Now they support Jerry Healy for mayor over their boy, their own personal Uncle Tom, L, Harvey Smith. When these two scoundrels threw Smith under the bus and supported Healy, Smith spoke before the Ministerial Alliance, stating that DeGise and Gaughan were racist. Now he see: they’re racist. Smith, they were always racist. You just couldn’t see it because your head was down, carrying water for these two, That is why we call you Uncle Harvey. Next we tell everybody why his widow barred you from Glenn Cunningham’s funeral.

The Jersey City Medical Center was the largest hospital in New Jersey.
April 26th, 2010
Jersey City Medical Center
50 Baldwin Avenue
State and National Registers of Historic Places, 1975
Designed by John T. Rowland, the Medical Center – at one point with 1,800 beds – was the largest hospital in the State. Four main buildings of light yellow brick and terra cotta, ranging from 14 to 23 stories formed an imposing segment of the city’s skyline.
Jersey City Mayor Frank Hague promised and produced the Medical Center. Work started in 1930 with the addition of a surgical building to the old City Hospital. The deepening Depression halted construction in 1932. Franklin Roosevelt greatly appreciated Frank Hague’s help in getting out the vote; from Washington D.C., generous funding flowed. Construction continued through 1941, providing jobs that saved many in Jersey City from ruin.
Housed in a 10-story structure, the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital was added to the complex in 1931. At its peak of operation in the late thirties, quite possibly more babies were born there than in any other hospital of the Nation; the total for 1936 was 5,088. Of the 6,096 mothers admitted in that year, only 20 died – a maternal mortality of about one-third of 1 percent. The infant mortality was 2.5 percent. Both figures were well below the national average.
In addition to the surgery building and the maternity hospital, the campus included the nurses’ residence (Murdoch Hall), hospital for chest diseases (Pollock), a psychiatric hospital, and an outpatient clinic. The Medical Center’s services were free.
